What factors should be considered when choosing activated carbon for water purification?

In terms of advanced treatment or upgrading of wastewater at the end of the chemical industry park, the activated activated carbon adsorption process is a water purification method that many units will consider because of its simple reaction mechanism and convenient operation and maintenance. So when choosing activated carbon for water purification, what factors should we consider?

Regarding the choice of activated carbon type, whether it is granular activated carbon or powdered activated carbon, its product parameters such as iodine value and blue value are not necessarily proportional to its adsorption effect. For example, for activated carbon with an iodine value of 900, the COD adsorption effect is not necessarily better than that of activated carbon with an iodine value of 800; and for activated carbon with the same product parameters, the adsorption effect may not be the same, or even very different.

This is because the adsorption effect of activated carbon is determined by many factors of the activated carbon itself, such as the base material and process. These factors cannot be fully reflected in the product parameters. This is why many owners set a parameter index of activated carbon when selecting activated carbon, but the effect of purchasing another batch of activated carbon according to the same parameter index during operation is very different. This is the reason. Therefore, it is recommended that every time you buy activated carbon, you either designate a certain type of activated carbon for a certain type of substrate from a certain manufacturer, or ask the supplier to send samples for experiments before purchasing large quantities.

In addition, regarding cost issues, many people are more concerned about the price of activated carbon per ton, but we suggest that you should be more concerned about the cost of activated carbon per ton of water. For example, if we use powdered activated carbon A, the dosage is 50ppm, and the price of activated carbon is 7,500 yuan/ton, then the cost of activated carbon per ton of water is 0.375 yuan; for powder activated carbon B, the dosage is 70ppm, and the price of activated carbon is 6,500 yuan/ton. The cost of activated carbon per ton of water is 0.455 yuan. You see, using powdered activated carbon A with a high unit price, the cost of activated carbon per ton of water is lower, and because the dosage is small, the amount of sludge produced is also less, and the cost of sludge is also lower.
